WHERE IT ALL STARTED!
As a child, I could remember wanting a pair LA Gear shoes and they were outside of the budgeted amount my parents had set aside for shoes. I wanted them so bad that I would collect pop cans from my bicycle on weekend mornings to purchase them myself. At 8 years old, I worked my butt off for what seemed like forever to collect enough cans to come up with just over $30.00. The feeling of accomplishment had been instilled in my life and collecting those pop cans became the foundation of work ethic that would forever transform my life. Of course, I wouldn’t know that at the time. I was just wanted those bottom light up flashing shoes!
As I grew older and stronger, I began shoveling snow, raking leaves, and cutting grass to earn money. I can remember when the other kids were grabbing a sled, I was grabbing my shovel. I would always take care of my neighborhood customers first, and then venture into another neighborhood where I would shovel until dark. On my way home, I would stop by at my grandpa and grandma’s home and shovel their driveway free of charge and then head home for dinner. I remember earning upwards of $500 a day through this tough physical work. It always amazed my dad that I found a way to make as much in 1 day as many adults made in an entire week.
By the time I was 14, I was working for Loch Lomand Golf Course. At 15, I decided to work for Snappy Lawn Care which later became a great choice because it paid very well for someone my age. As the summer came to a close dad had made me a great offer, he would pay for my first vehicle, gas, spending cash, and insurance if I would continue playing golf on the Grand Blanc Golf Team. Although it crushed my parents, I decided that was not the person I was and continued to work and quit golf. By age 17, I was working with the lawn care and owned my own lawn care where I would take great care of my customers on the weekends.
As a junior, I decided to take the Building Trades Course offered through Grand Blanc High School by the Genesee Area Skill Center. It was there that I learned a great deal about building. Soon another summer had passed and I sold my lawn care business because I had decided that I was going to become a union carpenter. While attending Grand Blanc High School as a senior I started working the weekends with a residential framing crew. I started as a laborer and by the end of the first day I was promoted to a framer and my wage went from $8.00 per hour to $15.00. Don Lorenz, the owner, stated to me that if he could have a redo that he would have gone to Ferris State University to attend their Construction Management Program. So, 3 weeks before graduation, I set up an appointment to see my counselor. I thought to myself, my parents are providing a full paid college education and I am not taking advantage of it, this is crazy! After being accepted into the program, there I spent my next 4 years learning the construction business and the trade.
In 2003, prior to graduation, I went into business with my brother. We built our first new construction house and sold it after completion. Prior to graduation, we were taking on more work than we could handle and soon were running several crews doing new construction siding installations. After graduation, the new construction market was on the verge of collapsing, so we started contracting remodeling and insurance work. Although, we were general contracting a variety of home improvements, siding and roofing was where we dominated the market. We remained in business together into 2015 where we mutually agreed to exit our partnership in which I became the sole owner of Timbercrest. Since then, I have changed the direction of Timbercrest-to-Timbercrest Roofing and Siding. We specialize in Roofing, Siding, Gutters, Hail Damage and Wind Damage.
